The importance of manual work
An essential point of the Rule of the monks is that they must not only earn their living by their own work, like all mortals, but must also procure through this work the means to assist those poorer than themselves. They strive to find a type of work which will allow them to maintain the harmonious alternation of prayer, study and work.
At Scourmont, besides the agricultural activities that they have pursued since the start of their community, in the last century, the monks have nearly always made beer and cheese.
